Spring is coming

Spring is coming to Ohio!

With Groundhog Day just past us, it’s time to start thinking about spring. (Or time to at least hope that springtime is coming, anyway.) And whether Punxsutawney Phil or the local groundhog saw his shadow or not, we here at Beck Insurance Agency have you covered.

Get ready for spring

Although everyone thinks of cleaning when it comes to spring, there are a number of things you should do to make sure your home is ready when the weather in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan changes. Below is a selection of maintenance tasks from the National Center for Healthy Housing (you can see the full list at http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/documents/huddoc?id=DOC_12334.pdf).

Check to make sure your roof’s shingles are in good condition, and check your attic for any possible roof leaks that should be repaired.
Look for peeling paint and repair/touch up as needed.
Check for signs of leaks at window and door sills and use caulking or weather stripping to seal.
Clean your dryer vent and make sure exhaust ducts are clear.
Make sure there are no puddles or wet spots in your basement or crawlspace.
Look for signs of rodents, roaches, termites, etc. Call an exterminator if you suspect an infestation.
Clean your gutters and downspouts.
Clean air conditioner coils and drain pans.
Check/replace the batteries your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Replace filters in your air conditioner and dehumidifier.
Store winter heaters, ensuring that liquid-fuel heaters are completely emptied. These should be stored outside, if possible.

What? Six more weeks of winter?

Well, you can take solace in the fact that spring will be here eventually. In the meantime, here are some quick tips from Johns Hopkins University to avoid the “winter blues” and get through those long weeks of waiting.

Keep active. Exercise releases endorphins that will elevate your mood.
Eat well. High-sugar foods and large amounts of caffeine can feed depression and actually decrease your energy level. Foods such as whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood and lean meats can help your immune system.
Go to the light. Bring as much light into your life as possible, by spending time outdoors, opening your shades so your home receives more natural light, or even get help from a “light box.”
Get your rest. Go to bed around the same time every night and wake up at the same time each morning. You’ll have more energy during the day.

Of course, if you have strong feelings of depression, please seek assistance from friends, family or a trusted health-care provider. There are people ready to help, whatever the season.

SIDEBAR: Time for an insurance review?

If an annual insurance review wasn’t included in your New Year’s resolutions, why not get it done while you’re in the cleaning and organizing mood this spring? Your life changes over the course of a year — sometimes in monumental ways. That means your insurance needs can change, too.

At Beck Insurance Agency, we can work with you to make sure you’ve got the coverage you need, while at the same time utilizing all possible credits and discounts to make that coverage affordable. Just give us a call at 419-446-2777. We want to help you meet your goals, and make sure what’s important to you is protected!

Home Insurance in Sylvania OH, Montpelier OH, Perrysburg, and the Surrounding Areas

Beck insurance can help you with best value home insurance in Bryan OH, Defiance OH, Delta OH, Maumee, Monclova OH or Perrysburg.

Home insurance is one of the most important personal insurance products on the market. It protects one of your biggest, if not your biggest financial investment against common risks such as fire, storm damage, content theft, liabilities and more.

When it comes to home insurance it is important to know what risks and events are covered and which ones are excluded. Flood insurance is a good example. Because floods can affect large areas and cause massive damage on large scale, most insurance companies shy away from offering flood insurance. You may well need to supplement your home insurance with separate flood insurance. You will also need to consider other natural disasters such as earthquakes, land slides and find out if you are insured for such events. Hone insurance should also cover your contents. General content will be covered but you may need to specify high-end items such as jewelry and artwork separately.

Whether you own a free-standing home, an apartment or a condo, you need a proper homeowners’ insurance policy. Even if you rent a home, you should still have proper content insurance. You also need to be sure you covered for the replacement value of your home and contents. The expert and friendly team at Beck Insurance will help you with the right homeowners insurance in Bryan OH, Defiance OH, Delta OH, Maumee, Monclova OH or Perrysburg.

Auto Insurance in Defiance OH, Maumee, Sylvania OH, and the Surrounding Areas

Beck Insurance provides auto insurance services throughout Defiance OH, Delta OH, Maumee, Moncolva OH, Napoleon OH and Perrysburg.

When looking for auto insurance its often better to deal with an independent agent as opposed to a captive agent. A captive agent represents a specific carrier whereas an independent agent deals with multiple carriers. An independent agent works for you and not the carrier.

When is comes to auto insurance you also have choices and options with respect to coverage. The only coverage that is compulsory is liability coverage. When you drive a vehicle on public roads you have a social responsibility. That means you need to drive carefully and according to road traffic laws. But it also means if your poor or reckless driving results in injury to others you need to be in a position to compensate them.  Liability insurance covers you for 3rd party claims related to road accidents.

Apart from liability insurance you can optionally choose additional coverages. Collision is an important one and makes sense. There is always a risk that you will be involved in some collision or road accident. Collision insurance will cover the damages to your vehicle. That means the insurance will for the repairs to your vehicle or the replacement of your vehicle. If you don’t have collision insurance and unable to pay for the repairs, you will be without wheels. Even if you can pay for the repairs it will be a lot of money out of your pocket compared to the small amount you will pay for collision coverage.

If you want affordable an reliable auto insurance in Defiance OH, Delta OH, Maumee, Monclova OH, Napoleon OH or Perrysburg, the Beck Insurance can help.

‘Rideshare Guy’ Says 60-80% of Drivers Still Don’t Have Correct Insurance

He calls himself “The Rideshare Guy” and he’s become one of the more prolific voices covering the still-burgeoning business.  Harry Campbell video here.

When Uber and Lyft were at the point in development that they were considered by some to be just another fly-by-night constituent of the gig economy craze, Los Angeles-area engineer Harry Campbell started driving part‑time for both app-based firms and he also started a blog on ridesharing.

As a structural engineer working on fleetwide problems for Boeing Co.’s 757 aircraft, he was doing well for himself. But in a short amount of time, his ridesharing blog took off, so three years ago he quit his day job to focus on the blog full‑time.

The blog, which has everything from articles to podcasts to YouTube videos, currently reports 500,000 views a month.

Eventually, the blog launched a video training course to help educate rideshare drivers on subjects that range from getting started to how to make more money as a driver, and it also has a running list of insurance carriers that offer rideshare insurance.  (Beck Insurance offers Rideshare policies in Ohio through Acuity Insurance, and in Michigan through ProgressiveRequest quote here.)

The Rideshare Guy spoke with Insurance Journal on ridesharing matters that our readers may have an interest in. This has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Insurance Journal: Can you talk about how ridesharing has changed in the last two or three years?

The Rideshare Guy: One of the biggest changes we’ve seen in the past few years is that rideshare has become mainstream. I think that when you start to hear your parents and your grandparents talking about Uber and Lyft, you know that the companies have really made it.

When these services were first starting, it wasn’t a sure thing that they were going to take over like they have. Uber has grown into a worldwide brand. It’s become a service that’s extremely popular with drivers, with passengers, and consumers. That’s what we’ve seen, an explosive growth and probably not going to stop any time soon.

IJ: What some of the hot button issues in ridesharing today?

The Rideshare Guy: Coming from the perspective of a driver, one thing we’ve seen over the past three years is that rates have actually come down significantly. You probably notice this as a passenger consumer that taking an Uber around the city is now cheaper than ever. It’s up to 50 to 70 percent cheaper than a taxi in many large cities. That’s great for consumers and passengers, but definitely a downside for the drivers is that they’re obviously making less than ever.

We surveyed over 1,100 drivers earlier in the year. They reported making an average hourly earnings of $16. That’s actually before expenses. Drivers, since they’re independent contractors, they’re responsible for gas, and maintenance, and depreciation on their vehicle and even rideshare insurance. They have to cover all of those costs.

You can see that the trend is that the pay for these drivers is getting closer to more of a minimum wage or a service type job even though not everyone has that impression.

IJ: What would you tell our insurance professional listeners about ridesharing that they should know?

The Rideshare Guy: One of the shocking stats that I see is that most drivers don’t have rideshare insurance. We’ve surveyed our audience and seen, depending on the surveys we’ve done in the past, 60 to 80 percent of drivers don’t have rideshare insurance.

That provides for a big issue for drivers just because they receive coverage while they’re en route to a passenger or while they’re on a trip. They actually don’t have coverage when they have the app on and they don’t have a passenger yet, when they’re waiting for a passenger. Personal insurance won’t cover that. Uber and Lyft only provide state minimum liability and no collision coverage.

That speaks to what we see with drivers in general. You have a lot of drivers that get into working for Uber and Lyft, just looking to make a few hundred bucks a week. They’re just looking to do a side hustle. They’re looking to make some part‑time cash.

Of course, you also have full‑time drivers. But I think a majority of drivers are doing about 10 to 15 hours a week or less.

You have a lot of people who aren’t aware that they might even need rideshare insurance. They aren’t aware of the reporting and the tax requirements. There’s a big education component.

IJ: How can insurance agents approach drivers to educate them and even drum up a little business?

The Rideshare Guy: If you listen to that stat that a majority of drivers don’t have rideshare insurance, a lot of agents have seen that as a pretty big opportunity.

For insurance agents that are out there listening, I think that there’s actually some pretty easy steps that you can take. The most obvious would be when you’re in an Uber and Lyft, talking to drivers, asking them about their insurance situation, and just helping them understand and educate them as opposed to selling them on the rideshare insurance.

Home Insurance and Auto Insurance in Toledo, Maumec, Perrysburg OH, and Surrounding Areas

Your home is one of the biggest investments you likely to make so it is important that you protect your investment with solid hole insurance. Beck Insurance is an independent agent and can help you with solid home insurance in Maumee, Montpelier OH, Perrysburg, Toledo or Wauseon OH. Just because you have a homeowner’s policy does not mean there are no gaps. For example, if own a condo or town home you should be aware of what is covered by the body corporate and what you need to cover.

Whether you own a freestanding home, a flat, a condo, a penthouse, a vacation home or a home under construction, you need proper home insurance. Even if you are renting, you still have valuables that need to be covered. You landlords policy won’t cover your losses or your liabilities.

Every insurance policy has exclusions and limitations. Your homeowner’s insurance wont cover every event or eventuality.  There are also limits to how much your insurance will pay in the event of a calamity. Some exclusions can be quite serious and you need to be aware of them. For example, does your policy include flood insurance?  Its too late when the storm surge hits to find out you don’t have flood insurance. Certain events such as floods, earthquakes and other disasters can be covered with supplemental policies.

Your home insurance will also have limits with respect to high end items such as jewelry, fine art and other collections. You also need to know if you are insured for the replacement value of your home and possessions.

It is a good idea to discuss your insurance need with a professional such as a consultant at Beck Insurance agency. That way you can have peace of mind that your home and insurance policies are good and proper.

Stop Texting and Driving – a free app??

Texting and driving has become an epidemic in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed 3,477 lives in 2015 alone.  This number has only climbed year after year.

Recent statistics now indicate that 1 out of 4 accidents are a direct result of texting and driving.

In addition to the obvious safety issues and dangers, insurance carriers are seeing a significant impact of cell phone use while driving – both in frequency and severity on auto insurance claims.  This widespread cell phone use while driving (combined with sustained lower gas prices) are now causing Auto Insurance premiums to rise in reaction in order to maintain acceptable combined loss ratios moving forward.

Beck Insurance Agency has experienced first hand the impact of texting and driving, having had one of our carriers recently paying a settlement of nearly $1.2M for an accident caused by texting and driving for a client.

While the solution is obvious, the implementation is not quite as easy.  Parents can’t always police their teenage drivers, employers can’t always police their drivers and / or employees.

Maybe until now??  Recently reading a Truck Insurance article by Acuity Insurance I learned of a new (free) cell phone app called “LifeSaver“.  While I have not personally yet used the app, (and this is not an endorsement or an official recommendation) I do feel that it is certainly worth looking into if you 1) have loved ones, 2) have a hard time putting the phone down yourself, or 3) own a company that requires employees to drive.  I will be personally checking it out.

If you wish to give it a try, there is the LINK to their website.  If you do try it, please contact us HERE and let us know what your experience was and if you liked or disliked the app.
