It’s almost boating season again, thus another reminder to run your engine blower for several minutes prior to starting your watercraft. Sadly too many people either aren’t aware they need to run their blowers or are in too big of a hurry to do so.
Inboard and Inboard / Outboard engines are tucked inside confined spaces which don’t exactly breathe well. Left alone, fuel vapors will build up in the engine compartment and settle on the bottom. If there were to be an errant spark from the cap / rotor, ignition coils, spark plugs, or plug wires, this spark can easily ignite the built up vapors and cause the engine compartment / watercraft to literally explode. While this sounds crazy, it happens all the time and it’s completely avoidable.
Please, please, please…..make running your blowers a priority before starting your boat every single time.
Better yet, regardless of how much experience you have – taking a boating class can save your life, and the lives of others. Class are available through the Ohio DNR, the US Coast Guard, Boat US, and many others.
